Hey, busy mamas! Juggling mealtimes for the whole family can feel like a constant circus act, right? Enter the family air fryer, a countertop hero promising crispy, healthy eats with minimal fuss. But with so many models and features, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Fear not! This guide will answer your burning air fryer questions and help you find your perfect match.

Why Should I Get An Air Fryer?

The air fryer hype is real, but is it worth joining the bandwagon? For the longest time, I thought an air fryer was optional, but now that I have an air fryer, I use it many times per week – at least five times. If you want a simpler life, and desire to create sensational flavors faster and easier, then an air fryer will get you there. Like an oven, an air fryer allows me to set it and forget it. Most models come with timers and auto-shutoff features, freeing up your time for other tasks.

How an air fryer works:

Think of it as a supercharged mini convection oven. A rapid fan circulates hot air around your food, creating a crispy golden “fried” texture with minimal oil. Unlike the toaster oven, the magic lies in this hot air circulation, mimicking deep-frying, but without the large amounts of fat, wasted oil and clean up.

What does an air fryer do?

The word frying is probably a misnomer, because the typical air fryer goes far beyond just “frying”! I get it – it’s a very catchy name and easy to say, but I think calling it an air fryer is doing this tool injustice. This versatile appliance can:

  • Fry: Fries, chicken wings, nuggets, veggies, and more get deliciously crispy with minimal oil.
  • Roast: Vegetables, potatoes, and even small cuts of meat come out perfectly tender and flavorful.
  • Bake: Smaller cakes, mini frittatas, muffins, cookies, and even reheating pastries is a breeze.
  • Reheat: Leftovers get crispy and revitalized instead of soggy. To warm up most food, instead of using the microwave, I now use my air fryer (unless it’s something like soup or a plate of food)
  • Dehydrate: Make your own dried fruit, veggies, and even beef jerky for healthy snacks.

What’s the Average Lifespan of an Air Fryer?

With proper care and usage, most air fryers can last for 3-5 years. Look for models with durable materials and reliable brands for longevity. But with the very low cost of modern air fryers, you can’t go wrong here.

What are the Downsides of an Air Fryer?

  • Size limitations: While some models accommodate larger families, they can’t replace full-sized ovens for big roasts or baking large batches.
  • Learning curve: Experimenting with cooking times and techniques might take some practice.
  • Countertop space: Consider your available space before purchasing an air fryer.
  • Cost: Higher-end models with more features come at a premium price.

If you’re looking for a versatile appliance to cook healthier, crispier versions of your favorite foods, an air fryer can be a valuable addition to your kitchen. It’s not a magic bullet, but it can definitely be a game-changer for creating sensational flavors with less effort and skill.

How Do I Choose an Air Fryer for My Family?

It all boils down to your family’s needs and cooking style. I found these factors to help guide you.

Do Want to Bake a Whole Chicken?

You can do whole chickens in some but you would need a larger 6-8 quart size. I recommend at least 7 quarts if you’ve got the budget to do so. However, if you have a slightly smaller air fryer you can opt to cut the chicken into two halves and roast that way.

Selection Guide: For a 4-5 pound bird, look for an air fryer with at least 5-quart capacity | For larger chickens or multiple dishes, consider 6-8 quarts

Do You Often cook pizza or Flat Breads?

You can absolutely cook pizza in an air fryer! Smaller pizzas (up to 12″) fit perfectly in some 4-quart models, while larger air fryers can handle bigger pies. Frozen pizzas? Even easier to put in, although pizzas are harder to take out the air fryer once done.

One large air fryer vs dual zone?

One large air fryer offers more cooking space, while dual zones let you cook different foods at different temperatures simultaneously.

Scenarios for Dual Zone Air Fryers

  • Dietary diversity: Accommodating different dietary needs can be a challenge. The dual zones come to the rescue! Air-fry tofu for the vegan in your family while simultaneously cooking salmon for the pescatarian, all in one appliance.
  • Keeping Warm While Cooking: Hosting a crowd for the big game? Utilize both zones! Whip up crispy mozzarella sticks in one zone while simultaneously keeping mini pizzas warm and gooey in the other. Bonus points for offering sweet and savory options by air-frying cinnamon rolls in one zone while keeping buffalo wings crisp in the other.
  • Efficiency Maximization: My husband likes when we maximize the use of electricity, and afterall, air fryers use lots of electricity, just like your iron, to get hot. For example, reheat last night’s roasted chicken in one zone while simultaneously roasting potatoes to perfection in the other.
  • Cooking at Two Different Temperatures: Sometimes you want hot and fast, like when cooking bacon, while wanting to cook something low and slow.

This discussion brings up another vital question….

Instead of a Dual Zone, Should I get TWO Air Fryers?

Well, talk about taking me to heaven. Two air fryers does sound delightful. If you entertain frequently or cook portions for eight or more persons a couple times per year, then yes, two air fryers could be a game-changer. But for most families, one high-capacity model suffices.

I can say, a dual zone air fryer is such a specialized tool that it probably makes more sense to get two single zone air fryers. It seems to me the major advantage of a dual zone air fryer is the space savings, but what about geting a large and small single zone air fryer? It’s rare you’ll use both at the same time anyway, and you’ll benefit from having more counter space as the dual zone air fryers tend to be large.

How Big an Air Fryer Do I Need?

Here are the common air fryer sizes you’ll find in brands:

2-4 quarts: Ideal for 1-2 people, perfect for quick snacks and sides | Examples: Two boneless skinless thighs, shrimp skewers, one pound of potato wedges, eggplant slices, half a pound of brussel sprouts

4-5 quarts: Fits small families of 3-4, great for main courses and side dishes | Examples: 5 muffins, 3 cinnamon rolls, one pound of french fries, a whole head of cauliflower, 2-3 pork chops, large fish fillets, a smaller whole chicken cut into halves.

6-8 quarts: Perfect for families of 5-6, accommodates larger roasts and pizzas | Examples: Whole chicken, large slab of salmon, tofu blocks, a whole head of cauliflower, a 10″ quiche, apple cobbler, whole eggplant

Choosing the right air fryer size is crucial for happy air frying! Here’s a breakdown with top picks and runner-ups for each family size, along with reasons why they shine:

Best Budget, Simple, Straight Forward Family Size Air Fryer

Chefman TurboFry 8 Quart

This large capacity airfryer is super affordable and allows you to easily set the time. If you’re still on the fence about the value of air fryers (like I was once upon a time) then you’ll find this low enough of a price to not worry.

I decided to add this category in the 6-8 quart range because, well, not every air fryer needs to be complicated. You can have a simple air fryer with time and temperature and that works just fine. Yes, the others offer more convenience, but like a car, the function is to get you from point A (uncooked) to point B (finished meal).

  • Runner-Up 1: Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven TOA-26: This price is very hard to beat and for the size, you are getting a lot of machine for a very reasonable price.
  • Runner-Up 2: Instant Vortex Plus 6 Qt: This countertop powerhouse features a large 6.3-quart capacity and a digital display for precise temperature and time control. While it offers additional functions like roasting and baking, the simple interface allows for easy air frying. Plus, the included accessories like a crisper plate and roasting basket expand your culinary horizons.

Remember, these are just my recommendations based on popularity and features. Consider your budget, counter space, desired functions, and cooking style when making your final decision.

What I Wish I Knew Before I Got My Air Fryer?

  • The Air Fryer is not an Oven Replacement: It excels at quick, crispy dishes, but baking large cakes or casseroles might still require your trusty oven.
  • The Air Fryer is Absolutely Indispensable For MY Family: From frozen fries to roasted veggies, it’s become our go-to for healthy, fuss-free meals. Plus, cleanup is a breeze!
  • My 7 and 8 year Old Kid Can Use the Air Fryer: With simple instructions and supervision, it’s a great way to get kids involved in the kitchen.
  • The Air Fryer is Not a Standalone Tool: Pair it with other kitchen appliances for ultimate meal prep efficiency.
  • A Basic Air Fryer Works Perfectly: There’s no need to get complicated, all you need are time and temperature controls, like this Chefman Air Fryer.
  • Go Bigger: Ultimately, I think it’s better to go bigger than your current family size as you never want to overcrowd your air fryer. The price difference is sometimes as low as $20 between a 4 quart and 6 quart.
